Solar Eclipse in Leo: The Penultimate Total of a 1,280-Year Series, and the First Eclipse on the New Nodal Axis
On August 12, 2026, at around 17:38 UTC, the Moon slides in front of the Sun at 20 degrees Leo and briefly turns afternoon into twilight along a narrow track across the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, and northern Spain. Two things about this specific eclipse are worth naming before anything else.
First: it’s the penultimate total of Saros 126. Every eclipse belongs to a family. Saros 126 began in 1179 and will run until 2459 (72 members total, only 10 of them total eclipses). This is the ninth. The series already hit its peak duration on July 10, 1972 at 2 minutes 36 seconds; the 2026 eclipse comes in at 2 minutes 18 seconds; the last one (August 23, 2044, visible from the contiguous United States) will be shorter still. Then the totality phase of an 847-year-old family concludes forever. The arc is closing.
Second: it’s the first eclipse on the new nodal axis. On July 27, the Lunar Nodes moved from Pisces/Virgo into Aquarius/Leo, opening an 18-month chapter that runs through March 2028 (full post here). Every eclipse for the next eighteen months lands on Leo or Aquarius. This one is where the whole chapter opens.
Two rare framings, one sky.
This eclipse feels like
- The instant a photograph is taken and before you know whether you liked how you looked in it
- Watching someone else receive praise that used to be reserved for you and noticing what you feel about that
- The pause in a song where the vocals drop out and the instruments hold the room alone
- Being called by a name you haven’t used in years and turning your head before you decide whether to answer
- The moment you realize the story you’ve been telling about yourself is the shortened version, and the longer one is asking to be told
Nervous system care
- Do the eclipse alone. Even nowhere near totality, the sky is doing something the body registers. Give yourself a slow hour that afternoon or evening. Not for anything. Just to be inside your own light while the outer one shifts.
- One creative act, made out of your own hand. Not on a screen. A meal made from a recipe you invented, a song hummed while walking, a note left on paper. Leo is the sign of making something because it wanted to be made. The eclipse cycle it starts wants a mark, not a metric.
- Water. Actual water. The whole configuration is fire and air (four bodies in Leo, no personal planet in a water sign this week except a stressed Mars in Cancer). Drink more than you think you need. The body doesn’t get subtle about dehydration when the sky is this dry.
Why this eclipse matters
Three layers stack on this one.
The nodal axis just opened, and this eclipse walks through the door first. The North Node in Aquarius asks the collective question: what am I part of, whose future am I helping build. The South Node in Leo describes what to release: the version of self-expression that lives only for the applause. The eclipse lands on the South Node side, which means the opening question is what the “I” releases so the “we” can form.
The Saros family is winding down its totality phase. Nine down, one to go, then Saros 126 stops producing totals. Whatever pattern the family has been carrying across 47 previous eclipses (Saros families do seem to cluster themes across the years they touch) is speaking near the end of that expression. Not the peak, and not the finale, but the second-to-last time.
Four bodies in Leo, plus a fire trine to Saturn. Sun and Moon at 20° Leo, Jupiter at 9° Leo, Mercury at 5° Leo. Not a tight stellium but a Leo cluster of unusual density. Saturn retrograde at 14° Aries trines the eclipse point at about 5° orb. Fire trines Aries-Leo tend to feel like the ground giving permission for the move it’s already made underneath you. The eclipse lights the cluster; Saturn’s structural weight quietly agrees.
The aspects
Sun conjunct Moon at 20° Leo, exact. The definition of a New Moon: Moon rejoins the Sun. In an eclipse, the Moon’s disc crosses in front of the Sun’s. The reset is total. Eclipse new moons plant seeds that are still growing six months from now.
Jupiter at 9° Leo and Mercury at 5° Leo, both applying to the Sun. Wider than classical conjunctions but still within Leo. Jupiter has been sitting in early Leo since June, and it’s the tone underneath the whole current Leo season, amplifying visibility and confidence. Mercury will reach cazimi later in the month, in Virgo, on the day of the lunar eclipse (more on that in the follow-up post).
Moon trine Saturn, 5° orb. Saturn in this angle to a lunation tends to give the emotional field a container it might not otherwise have. You may notice, around the eclipse, that the response you have is quieter and more structural than the size of the event suggests. That’s Saturn doing its work.
Venus at 5° Libra (domicile), Mars at 0° Cancer (fall). Venus is home in Libra, which underwrites the harder parts of the composition; whatever is being asked of the heart, the aesthetic and relational field is holding steady. Mars just arrived in Cancer (its sign of weakest expression) one day before the eclipse. If anger arrives sideways this week (moodiness, passive-aggression, inexplicable irritation about small things), that’s the Mars weather, not you failing at composure. Named, it becomes manageable.
Neptune retrograde at 4° Aries, Pluto retrograde at 4° Aquarius. The Barbault Basket that clustered four outer planets at 4° in July (full post) is still active. Both outer planets remain at 4° of their signs, weaving quietly through the eclipse chart. The eclipse doesn’t cancel that context. It happens inside it.
The cycle
The Full Moon in Aquarius on July 29 opposed the Sun with Jupiter riding it and the nodes freshly shifted. What became visible under that light is the ground this eclipse plants into. The next lunation is the Lunar Eclipse in Pisces on August 28. A lunation cycle inside an eclipse cycle inside a nodal chapter, all opening within eighteen days of each other. Unusually compact.
The last total solar eclipse in Leo happened on August 21, 2017 (the Great American Eclipse at 28° Leo, on the previous Leo/Aquarius nodal chapter). Nothing in astrology works by literal repetition, but the archetypal territory (Leo eclipses, visibility resets, what the individual owes the collective) is being revisited from a new degree and a psyche that has moved through nine years of intervening experience.

Aries rising
5th house: creativity, romance, play, what you make for its own sake. If a creative project has been asking for a first move, the six months following are the window. Saturn in your 1st is trine the eclipse, quietly agreeing.
Taurus rising
4th house: home, family, roots, the emotional interior. Something at the foundation shifts. The Leo placement means the shift may include a piece that’s more visible than usual (a public change of address, a family conversation held in front of others).
Gemini rising
3rd house: communication, siblings, immediate environment, short-form writing. A message wants out. Uranus in your 1st is helping ideas arrive with less friction than usual.
Cancer rising
2nd house: money, resources, self-worth, what you own outright. A cycle opens around what you value. Mars in your 1st and in fall may make the initial motion feel more defensive than expansive. Give it time. The 2nd house is a slow room.
Leo rising
1st house, in your own body, in your own name. Solar eclipses in your rising sign are one of the more concentrated experiences astrology describes. The nodal South is also here, which sharpens the question: what version of self-presentation has been the residency of your comfort but not your growth?
Virgo rising
12th house: the interior, dream layer, private material not performed for anyone. A quiet reorganization in things that don’t have an outward audience. The Sun moves into your 1st on August 23, when the private material starts showing up in your bearing.
Libra rising
11th house: friendships, groups, chosen community. A group forms, dissolves, reshapes, or reveals itself as something other than you assumed. Venus, your ruler, is in your 1st in domicile, giving your own field a steady ground through the window.
Scorpio rising
10th house: career, public role. A visibility opens or a chapter of public identity begins to close. Pluto retrograde in your 4th (Aquarius) pairs the outward shift with a private restructuring of the home base you’re operating from.
Sagittarius rising
9th house: publishing, teaching, philosophy, travel, the framework you organize your life around. If you’ve been circling a large decision (a program, a move, a book, a spiritual practice), the six months after are the field where it clarifies. Jupiter, your ruler, is here amplifying.
Capricorn rising
8th house: shared resources, intimacy, transformation, what you’re bonded to that you didn’t choose. A financial arrangement or shared responsibility begins to reorganize. Saturn, your ruler, is trine the eclipse from Aries, giving structural support.
Aquarius rising
7th house of one-on-one relationships. A cycle opens for the relational field. The North Node is in your 1st, which pairs the relational reset with a personal one; who you’re becoming and who you’re becoming it with are the same question, worked from two directions.
Pisces rising
6th house: daily work, health, routines, the small habits that add up. A routine that’s not working starts to show it, or a new practice reveals itself as the one that will hold. Mars in your 5th (Cancer, fall) may want the change to arrive dramatically; it won’t, and doesn’t need to.
Closing
Eclipses aren’t punishments and aren’t rewards. They’re accelerators. Whatever was already ripening in the house the eclipse lights up moves faster than it would have on its own.
This one opens a chapter. The first eclipse on a new nodal axis is a doorway, and the shape of the doorway is Leo: the heart, the signature, the willingness to be seen for what you make and who you are. It’s asking a question the Aquarius pole will keep asking through 2028: what part of your visibility is for the collective, and what part is only for the room you’re currently in.
You have six months to notice what’s opened. The sky isn’t in a hurry.
